July Drawing Dump

I've literally just got a box of odd drawings I've done over the last two months that I'm going to dump here. All over your new carpet.

These four are illustrations to accompany some covers I've made in my bedroom. They're crap. Check them out here

This is a drawing I done for Anthony Bergen of Dead Presidents fame. You don't know what Dead Presidents is? Now you do. It's a really good resource for anything Presidential. And here's some odds and ends:

Hmmmmmmm here's a crap study of Amaury Duval's Birth of Venus for some mate's theatre production (with rough ideas nicked from the greats, mainly Egon Schiele) and a quick self-portrait. I've just come back from Berlin and had my head stuffed with expressionist painting and woodblock. Yum

Retro games!

It's been a while since I updated this - the main reason being simply that I did set up a website with a dedicated domain name, but it was quite expensive. Anyway, I have been doing work, mainly in relation to my job. Here's some little highlights of my personal work though, basically mucking around with some old video games. The last Metroid one is essentially a failure that has been sitting around for too long, and I wanted to get it finished or something.



I've also got a dedicated cartoon thing going on Facebook and Twitter - a cartoon a day, and I'll put a link up to this later. PEACE

Pulgasari

There is actually some context for these pictures, though perhaps it's funnier if you don't read it; these are a series of 8 images I quickly knocked together to test my new project idea out. They're based on the story of famous Korean film director Shin Sang-ok, who in 1978 was kidnapped along with his ex-wife from the South to the communist north.

Shin Sang-ok's story of his kidnapping on the whole is a bit suspect, though doubtless he was imprisoned and any fibs on his part were, at worst, protection from South Korea's harsh laws against aiding the DPRK. In any case, Pulgasari is the most well known of Shin Sang-ok's forced films there, and undoubtedly the worst. It's a Kaiju film with communist overtones; ripe for parody.

Metaphor alert: Pulgasari in these images is actually Kim Jong-il. Also, once again, I apologise for the Korean; it's more for the aesthetics than for actually making sense.

Koyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanissssssssssqatsiiiiiiii

So they're photographing my stuff at uni...still. Never mind. Anyway, here's another snack, similar to before. The film next week is a personal favourite, Koyaanisqatsi, so I was all like "mate, I have to do this one", and then I did.

I don't think I'll be doing any more film posters for a while. Well, there is this one film I'm doing soon, in like, 2 months. I'll put it up when it's done. In the meantime: enjoy.

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives

Over at the uni, we've got the Prince Charles Film Club doing its weekly thang. To keep you guys entertained while I try and juggle these deadlines, and before I show you some real work, here's the poster I designed for next week's showing.

Apologies to my mangling of the Thai language. It was just so pretty I couldn't not include it.

To be fair

So those cards weren't made because I like drawing or anything (Ha!) - we had a print fair at the university. And it was a smashing success! The range of items on sale were truly perception-expanding; wrapping paper, paper dolls, cards, mini rosettes, etchings, t-shirts. We had such a great turnout and really the thanks all goes to some tutor called Leah who organised it or something.

Our UCA Illustration blog is worth looking at as is our Twitter stream too.

CRAPMAS!

These took far more time than expected...but hey! This year, impress and guilt trip your friends by reminding them that they are among the richest 10% of people in the world! Laughs all around as you all remember with fondness the aggressive military-financial campaigns in place by your Western countries across the Middle East, designed to cement further the economic superiority of our glorious countries. And remember; consume!

Standard Quay

This is from a while ago...anyway around May I did a project at Faversham's Standard Quay - a cracking place in Kent noted as a sort of home for the Thames Sailing Barge. Anyway, being a semi-public place, I parked myself down in the freezing February weather and sketched until my hands stopped functioning a few times a week. It's quite funny how the United Kingdom has a peculiar kind of beauty when under a freezing overcast sky and bare trees.

With thanks to a certain Basil Brambleby, I was able to gain access to the partially restored Sailing Barge Cambria, and some of the surrounding old shipwright houses. Here's some useful links that helped me with my little project:
